The thickness of the face veneer on oak plywood can vary significantly depending on the manufacturer’s dedication to quality. Unlike the majority of veneers used in plywood, which are rotary cut, the veneers used on premium oak and other hardwood plywood are plainly sliced, giving the impression of laminated oak boards. Oak plywood of the best grades has bookmatched veneers on the face, but they are also the most expensive.
The Architectural Woodwork Institute Quality Standard forbids the use of veneer core oak plywood for cabinet doors and other particular components in the highest grades of cabinetry because of these inconsistencies. It is believed that the quality of the finish is significant enough to outweigh any reduction in structural strength brought on by the use of particle board or MDF core oak plywood.
